Eye in the window

This happened in 'Yavatmal' in east Maharashtra, some 30 years back. I had traveled there  with a marriage party. After attending marriage I planned to visit few more places before returning home. After reaching venue a room was provided to keep our bags and belongings.

Marriage procession took place in the evening. Before leaving I checked my bag, counted my cash and hid it under cloths. As I was keeping my cash back I happened to look up momentarily. There was a window quite far across hall and it was almost closed with just a little slit in the center and in that slit I saw an eye just for a moment and then it vanished. It happened so fast that I did not believe my eyes and thought of it as some illusion. I locked my bag and then the room was locked by our group and we went with procession.

We returned after 2 hrs. Me and my friend spent some time talking and then I came back to our room. Flimsy lock of my bag was wrenched away and money had gone missing. This must have happened when room was reopened on returning. The thief obviously had very little time because my camera just below money pouch was safe. (A camera was a big thing in those days)

I borrowed some money from my friend and returned home. With time the pain of loss has vanished but that eerie image of an eyeball in the slit is permanently etched in my memory.

I hope I will never disregard my hunch again.
